There is no substitute for perfect daylight conditions or controlled studio lighting, but I am very impressed with the capabilities of this mini video light.
I have achieved some very interesting effects using this light, mostly outdoors in the evening, with my foreground subjects perfectly exposed against darker backgrounds (pitch-black city streets, fireworks, sunsets, etc).
Because the power supply is your camcorder, you never have to worry about replacing batteries or allowing the unit to sit unused for extended periods of time. It takes up almost no space in your camera bag, and it’s always ready to go when you need it. The price you pay for this convenience is that using this light will significantly reduce your usual recording time. Not a problem if you plan ahead and carry enough back-up power supply for your project.
One thing to be aware of when using this product is the 15 degree lighting angle. This focus allows a tiny 3 watt xenon bulb to illuminate subjects as far as 10 feet away; but in a wide-angle scene, only the center area of the frame will be fully lit. This drawback is clearly addressed in the product description, and I enjoy the artistic challenge of working around it. All things considered, this video light can be a very useful tool.
