Rated 5 out of 5 by Stealth Great sound
Bought this speaker at Future Shop. After hearing in the store I wasn't sure about the sound. Compared against the Bose and it was a close tie.
After bringing it home and listening to streaming Songza I was truely amazed by the range of sound this little speaker delivers. Bass was pretty good considering it's size and clarity of high notes was very very good. I'd recommend this speaker for sure. Good job Sony.

by DianaElizabeth So pretty!
Finally no eye sore when you want to play some music. I love that it's sleek and beautiful but also has the Sony sound quality. It's convenient to just turn on Bluetooth and stream the music. Taking calls on it is also great, very good quality and you don't have to stop what you're doing to take a call. I also love the carrying case so you can throw it in your tote when you go out to meet friends without worrying about it getting banged up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DoubleA 6 stars, hands down
... because 5 stars will not do the justice.
I have had huge expectations when I ordered this speaker and was simply blown away by the clarity and depth this speaker provides, far better than I had in mind. They say the power is reduced to half when on battery, but even on battery, this thing has enough punch to scare your cat away.
Bluetooth audio is too good that I'm having difficulty believing there are no hard wire connections. Although you can use a 3.5mm aux input provided in the back, should you need one. Talked to my mom this morning using the hands-free and it worked like a charm. Great range, awesome reception.
Just what anyone can expect from a top of the line product from Sony. If you're on the verge having trouble deciding on a portable speaker, look no further. This sure will put a big smile on your face.
Charges your phone too with a USB DC only output at the back. What else you want? :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by Electroman Unbelievable sound quality
After reading some great reviews of the btx500 on cnet and other sites, I took the leap. It was a leap worth taking. I am blown away by the crystal clear audio quality of this unit, by its sheer beauty, by the adjustable bass level it provides as well. Bass can be switched to min/off or on. A surround option is also present. Bass has a solid boom -- so much so that if this could be hooked up to a tv, it could be a sound bar in its own right. Great bluetooth connectivity too. As far as cons: Price is a bit high, but great if you get it on sale. Also, I believe the lith-ion rechargeable battery that makes it portable (if you don't use the plug) has a life of a few years. I don't know whether the battery is replaceable when it stops taking a charge (I suspect not), but even if/when that happens, I will just switch to AC power. All in all, a fantastic device that I will be enjoying for a long time to come. Thanks, Sony!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by brianlosangeles Awesome speaker!
This speaker is just awesome, easy to connect, durable too I dropped it many times due to my type of work In the mechanic field. Theres only one flaw, well not really a flaw more like a wish, I wish the battery would last a bit longer on full blast, it would hold 5 to 6 hours on bluetooth on 70 percent volume and 3 to 4 hours on 90percent , but if I take this to the beach I wished it would last longer or have an extra battery compartment to take external batteries when internal battery is dead. Or make a removable internal battery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mooncat Gorgeous sound
This is such a great-sounding speaker! The more I use it, the more in love I am. Unlike many reviewers (here and elsewhere), bass-heavy rock is the thing I listen to least, so booming base and/or volume have never been my overriding concerns. Hopefully my review will help other non-rockers whose primary interest is in finding great well-rounded sound when playing classical, World, pop, vocals, easy listening, etc. I do also listen to classic rock, though it's not the majority of my library. I want bass, for sure, but not at the expense of good mids and highs. And while I'm not going to be blasting my music (it's for the bedroom) I did want room-filling sound without the distortion of needing to boost the volume because the speaker isn't large/powerful enough. The 40W this speaker provides are perfect for my uses - relaxed listening alone, no party volume, plugged in and stationary. It will go much louder than I need it to go, without distortion or harshness and screechiness.
I have experimented between flat, bass boost, and bass boost surround, and so far for most of what I listen to, I'm favoring the surround. It's got the bit of extra bass, and the surround adds a discernible richness I prefer. For me, it also modifies the bass boost so you hear the extra bass *and* everything else. Gorgeous violin, piano, etc., and bass too.
In an ideal world, I wish it had the features of the 300iPN - charging dock, remote, FM radio - but the sound quality on this is just better, as there is more to the actual speaker in terms of size and quality. Ditto the BTX 300. The Bose Soundlink III was not as good for me as far as the type of music I listen to the most. I liked the sound I heard from the BTX 500 more.
As for appearance and use. It's sleek and sophisticated, with clean lines, as opposed to flashy. It looks like what it is, a serious, quality speaker. That is a plus for me. I don't really care about the portability or battery life, because 95% of my use will be plugged in, not moving. It was simple and quick to pair. I like the "always receptive" default setting that connects instantly when your device's BT is turned in, but like a lot less the flashing blue "searching" light that accompanies it even when the unit is turned off, meaning it's kind of non-functional if you turn the BT button off to get rid of the light. Might be able to put some dark tape over the light and get by. But that is honestly my only quibble. The more I use this speaker, the more I appreciate it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Ajtrek Great Premium Speaker
APT-X, AAC, NFC connectivity
iOS, Windows, Android friendly
Excellent sound reproduction - Hi, Mid, Low
No coloring of music
USB device charging
Remote Control by Devices via AAC
A little heavy for up and down the street portability
AC charger a bit bulky
I got to the party a little late as this speaker was introduced almost a year ago. However, good things come to those who wait as I bought it at $199.99 vs. original $299.99. This speaker compares well to Bose Soundlink II and Jambox speakers in the same class. Prefer the near flat response vs. the others which IMO does not add coloring at the expense of Highs or Lows depending upon the source material.
The surround mode IMO does this speaker and injustice although some may prefer the DSP effects. I prefer the mega bass setting which adds just the right amount of low-end punch without affecting the mids and highs.
Setup and paring is a breeze as I even did it in store on a demo model without a hitch using my iPhone 5S. Being able to do a direct comparison vs. the other speakers mentioned with my own music sold me on the Sony SRSBTX500.
Music listening is very subjective which is to say that some will like this speaker and others may prefer Bose or another brand. Price aside (as this speaker was on sale vs. the others) and all things being equal I would still prefer the Sony SRSBTX500.
I mentioned the weight. However, I don't think Sony intended the speaker for daily/weekly deployment at the beach or other outings. The Sony SRSBTX500 IMO is more of a room-to-room, extended hotel room stay or outside on the patio/deck unit.
I suspect that Sony will be discontinuing this model judging from their website showing soon to-be-released speakers and the sale pricing of $199.99. So, if you can find one I highly recommend giving this speaker an audition.
