Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA
Seamlessly functioning lens with the Sony a7R body
All systems are go with this perfect full frame lens for the a7R body. Every electronic setting of the a7R can be adjusted to work the optics of this lens. Focus is spot on; apochromatic images are a7R-perfected; and, as a result, they have depth, extremely high resolution, and clarity. The results are far superior to my medium format film camera. All automated functions of the a7R integrate seamlessly with this lens. For example, Clear Image Zoom makes this prime lens into a video zoom lens; e. g., Clear Image Zoom 2X through the Sony FE 55 mm F/1.8-F/22 Carl Zeiss prime lens, takes it up to 110 mm telephoto. Thereby, this lens can take portraits with spectacular F/1.8 bokeh or close ups with exquisitely detailed F/22 razor-sharp compositions. In a manner of speaking, just as our brains compensate for optical illusions, the A7R compensates for my brain not wanting to carry a weighty macro- or zoom lens everywhere. Of course, there are technical tradeoffs, but the point is that advanced electronic-optical hybridization in this system introduces flexibility. A large lens hood comes in the box with the lens. The hood twists on a bayonet mount and compactly reversibly mounts. Always use the hood out of doors, but it needs to be removed when using flash during macrophotography. I recommend a 49 mm Sony Zeiss Skylight & protector filter, invisible because of compatible lens coatings. Also, a 49 mm polarizing filter is useful. If you use a filter, get a new one because scratches and smudges on old filters may cause flares and this lens is unforgiving. The body and lens is so lightweight that I have them with me all the time. As a result, all of my pictures are so remarkably distinctive that everybody wants them.
