DJ Headphones are like shoes.

Lets face it DJs: Most beat up their gear. Theyre too caught up in the moment to preserve their gear the way a home audiophile would. The headphones get jerked around, then stuffed into a record bag. In my opinion, a good pair of DJ headphones are like a good pair of shoes or a good record. They get beat up because they are providing their use. No one complains to a shoe company about all the scuffs and wear and marks on a pair of $150 shoes after a year. No one complains to the record company when their vinyl gets scratched and crackly. As far as the damage to my headphones after SEVEN YEARS of use, I do have the stress cracks at the swivel joint, but they do not interfere with the performance. That area is made from several parts, so if one part cracks, the whole assembly does not fall apart. The headphones are good as new otherwise. I only noticed the cracks after people complained about them here, and they only appear as severe as in some of the reviewers photos if i pry them open. The tradeoff for the swivel cracks? A very articulated head band. True, Sony should re-engineer that area, but really it doesn't get in the way until then. Don't get these if you're a home listener or work in a studio environment. You don't need the articulated headband in those situations (typically). Get them if you need a great DJ reference headphone that rests on your head, rests on your neck, rests on your cheek, whatever your "look" is without them slipping....with the understanding that nightclub gear is perishable from time to time. I have never owned a pair of DJ headphones that didn't eventually crumble apart, but these have only cracked a bit.

I have owned these headphones since 2007 and they are perfect. I do agree that they are made cheaply and dont seem very durable but i have nothing wrong with mine because i take care of them. i listen to them at lease 4 times a week on average. They have never been droped or mistreated. The fact is anything will break especially headphones when they are abused. I just bought the MDR-EX700 earbuds and i am extremly dissapointed about the sound quality. These DJ headphones blow them out of the water. If you want good sound quality and dont want to spend a ton of money then these are the ones for you.

SWEET ! ! !

Pros: EVERYTHING !

Cons: NOTHING !

I've been through quite a few headphones over the years, and I have finally found a GOOD pair! These headphones do not distort even at high volume. They also are very clear dispite the ability to handle high music volumes. I have also found these to be slightly noise cancelling. The louder the volume, the less you hear around you!

Awesome headphones - poor construction

Pros: Sound quality is one of the best I've enjoyed

Cons: Cheap Materials

I have enjoyed my V700 for about 4 months taking very gentle care when using this headphones. I've read reviews about the poor construction so I used care when handling them. However, I accidentally dropped it from a desk height to a wooden floor and CRACK! I didn't except it to be that delicate. The swivel piece cracked splitting the arch piece to the actual speaker unit. I loved these headphones because of the sound quality and bass is incredible even though it is not a bass boost unit. I sincerely hate writing anything negative about Sony products since I only buy Sony and recommend it to EVERYONE! Sony needs to make use of different materials on the swivel and the arch if they want to hit a home-run with any of there high end headphones. Hopefully my next Sony headphones, SA-3000, don't share in the same faith, even though, I heard similar construction issues with them too. =(

6 Years and counting

Pros: Great bass, Great treble, durable.

Cons: None to describe....

I got these headphones when I was a sophomore in high school and have been using them for listening to music on my MP3, and of course for studio monitoring. I have turned bass WAY up on my mixers and instruments and these phones have not cracked or cut out on me ever. I have fallen asleep with the headphones on my head and woke up with the music still playing. I have gone through so many ear-bud and over ear headphones. I own skull candy and various other brands of headphones and I have always gone back to my Sony MDR-V700DJ's. I just got my girl friend a pair for when she plays guitar in her house and now she uses them for listening to her music also. I listen to these when I am on the bus or just walking around the City(SF). They have been rained on and been left in a car in some extreme heat and I have not noticed one difference in the sound over the course of 6 years. Very reliable SUPER sleek and clean. Ridiculously long cord and the quality is unbelievable. One of the best purchases I have ever made.

Over a decade on and still going strong

Pros: Great sound and range with superb power handling

Cons: Nothing to note in over 12 years of use.

I originally purchased these the MDR-V700's back in the summer of 2000, and during the past 12 years they have been used for a vast range of activities including: Pro Club DJ-ing, home mixing and mastering as well as general day to day personal use. I have to say these are fantastic headphones with well balanced sound and amazing power handing abilities which is one of my main reasons for purchasing them in the first place. You can push the MDR-V700's very hard without suffering any distortion at all which is perfect when using them in loud environments such as a nightclub. In all this time they have never given me a days trouble and for me this represents a truly great investment which has lasted the test of time. I don't think I actually own any other tech that has lasted as long as these headphones with the exception of one of my Casio G-Shocks from about 2003.. Bottom line, these headphones will last if looked after. I hope this helps :) JT

One of the best christmas gifts I have recieved!

Pros: excellent sound quality; comfortable and can handle the power input

Cons: You can only acquire them in the U.S.

I received these headphones as a Christmas gift from my former mother-in-law and they are the best headphones that I have acquired in a long time. Now let me make one thing clear, I am not a musician, but, I am a music lover. I listen to all types of music from classical to hard rock and these "DJ's " a long with a little tweaking from a graphic equalizer allow one to acquire a natural high when doing anything. I have used these headphones while working out, performing odd jobs around the house and even riding my bicycle through the city streets if T.O. The fit is very comfortable and if you have a powerfull enough source, you don't require noise cancellation. This comes in handy when working out, because it allows me to concentrate on the workout. The incredibly long cord is great when listening with them at home, but can become combersome when doing other activities. As for durability, these babies have shown no signs of abnormal wear. One final note. I use my "DJ's" frequently while working from home on my computer and if you have the right sound card (Creative), you will not want to listen to speakers again. These headphones are the BOMB!!!

Currently not worth it.

Pros: Sounds "fun"

Cons: shoddy engineering.

I've had a my MDR-V700 for quite a few years, now. I paid 100 some odd dollars for it, as I can remember; I wouldn't pay that price again. It's amazing Sony still sells this same subpar headseat, and are asking 150 dollars for it. Save yourself the trouble and look for other brands of headphones that are better engineered. While I have no problems with the sound (I bought them to rock out, and they serve that purpose), the rest of the phones are terrible as far as durability goes: the faux leather earpads and headbands flake away - the housing cracks - non replaceable cord I shouldn't be paying triple digits for some cheap all plastic headphone that cracks and creaks and flakes. I have V-Moda Crossfades, M-Audio Q40s, and Sennheiser HD600s; all are better products than the MDR-V700DJ. Spend your money wisely.

BEST HEADPHONES IVE HAD

Pros: Great Sound, Awesome Quality, Reliable

Cons: Leather Ear Cups

Ive had these headphones for a little over a year now and its safe to say that hands down these are one of the BEST pairs ive had. If your a hardstyle dj i HIGHLY recommend putting a lil bass boost on your EQ if your ever listening to your ipod. These headphones really capture every single detail of any kind of music and it even seams like it silences everything around you!!!!! The only flaw i found is the leather ear cups, if you have sensative ears i recommend going for MDR-V600 more comfartable for longer hours i know because a buddy of mine really hurt his ears with my headphones haha well hope this review helps anyone.

Pros: Great sound and comfort!

Cons: Swivel connecting headband cracks

As reported the plastic swivel cracks. Too thin and weak for normal stress. Possibly very limited home use may survive but not in a studio setting. Buy non swivel pro sets instead.

Nice sound but cheap plastic parts a problem

Pros: sound

Cons: quality of materials

I own 2 of these sets of phones and use them allot-i agree that they sound great-which they should for 100 bux retail- but i am switching to a different design because the plastic parts that hold the upper (not lower)earcup swivel mechanism on each side keep breaking-they are made of cheap plastic and have failed 4 times now-rendering the headphones unuseable since the earcup won't stay tight to your head when the plastic pieces that hold the swivel mechanism fail. If u are going to use these allot or wear them during outdoor activities u should get a different pair that does not have the upper swivels made like this. the parts that fail surround the upper swivel and are labeled "L" and "R", they are silver, and there are two on each side mated together with screws. Once they crack u are done since superglue will not keep the interior swivels from popping out when u use them faiurly often

Reasonably good Value for money

Pros: Clean sound, heavy on the bass

Cons: Little top end, rather dull, signal rolls off at approx 7khz

I purchased these recently to supplement my MDR-V600 headphones. I do a lot of wav editing on my computer and I need a good all 'round headphone that has a wide frequency range to pick up on the all the noise/hiss/clicks that have to be removed from audio files. My 600's are extremely good for this as they have a good frequency range to hear all of this. When I picked up the 700's I expected them to be better than the 600's but I am really let down because these phones seems to have very little top end (the upper frequency range literally rolls off at approx 7kz. not anywhere close to 15khz & nowhere close to Sony's advertized 30khz). If they ARE supposed to go up to somewhere above 15-20khz perhaps someone else can chime in and comment as to such. (I do realize that these are now discontinued) They look nice and fit well but for what I use them for they are a disappointment.

THEY will break! save your money and buy Technics

Pros: Great sound, solid bass

Cons: They are cheap and break easily. Sony is no help.

This are some of the best sounding DJ headphones out there. I bought a pair and used the gently for about a year. In that time, they cracked at the joints 3 times (on both sides). I did some research and this is a VERY common problem. There is even a petition to have sony The joints are made of cheap plastic and crack very easily. This is clearly a design flaw and Sony refuses to take responsibility for it. Sony does not offer replacement parts and they want $60 to replace them! Save your money and get a pair of Technics instead. They sound just as good but last way longer.

90% of the way there.

Pros: Excellent sound; Bass is amplified. Wire only connects to one ear, allows more maneuverability. Long Cord.

Cons: Hinge will break; easy fix with a small zip-tie. Can't get replacement parts. Can be uncomfortable if worn for 1hr+

These will last for a long time; and you won't be able to 'blow out' these speakers with any home stereo equipment. But there are flaws. I sat down on these headphones when the connector was in my back pocket; and it made a 'snap' sound. They still play, but now, almost a year later, I can tell that the connector is starting to go (sound changes when I twist the connector). You can see in the picture that the connector is still slightly bent. The hinge started to crack . the arch-shaped piece is connected to a square-edged section. the crack is tiny, and runs from the seam (next to the screw) to under the tube-shaped rotational piece. You can see the black zip-tie in the picture. The size-adjustment pieces have lost some friction, and slide more loosely now. not a huge problem, but they could wear out completely sometime soon. All in all, these headphones will last a whole lot longer than most. Definitely not as durable as the legendary V6's; but certainly a bit more comfortable. These headphones have an excellent sound, though I'm not an expert in these sort of things. The frequency response statistic is amazing (5 to 30,000Hz!) You can easily call out any DR DRE BEATS owners or SKULLCANDY owners on their terrible headphones. These easily outperform most anything you will see anyone wearing on the street.

Best DJ Headphones

Pros: LOUD, Swivel Design, Comes with carrying bag, Great sound quality

Cons: NONE

I just received these headphones today. These headphones are perfect for DJing. The swivel design works great. You can wear them in many different ways. The bass is really good unlike other DJ headphones so you can actually hear what is coming out of the DJ speakers. It has great sound quality that is very clear. These ARE VERY LOUD! Do not turn the volume up all the way because you might go deaf. It also come with a traveling bag. If you are looking for great headphones for DJ or home use, buy these!

Get rid of Supra-Aural and you have a winner

Pros: natural leather/construction

Cons: supra-aural ear cups

I can't stand the supra-aural design of the 700 earcup. On the other hand the natural leather is better than the urathane leather (see MDR-V600) which eventually peels away. Sometimes after only an hour of listening my ears are in pain from the constant "pinching" due to the cups resting on my ears. This is my 3rd pair of Sony DJ/Studio Headphones. My first two were MDR-V600's (see review there), and my latest set is the MDR-V700DJ. I have to go back to the MDR-V600 as their Circumaural ear cup design completely goes around the ear and are more comfortable to wear for hours. This is unfortunate because the MDR-V700 are better than the MDR-V600's in just about every other (non-audio) way. Summary: There is a trade-off. If you can stand the supra-aural resting on your ears and prefer the natural leather, go with the 700, if you like to wear the headphones for more than an hour - go with the 600. The 600's are cheaper and have the same audio performance anyway.

Pros: Good Sound Quality. Comfortable.

Cons: Comes apart at the Joints. Wish there were some screws

The best I used so far in terms of sound quality and comfort. Unfortunately I"m on my third one in three years. They come apart at the joints. Wish there were some scerws and replaceable wires. It is still the only one I woud buy.

Cheap parts render headphones unusable

Pros: Great sound when working

Cons: Cheap parts break quickly rendering the product unusable

Figure out the cost of not caring Sony: (1) I'm looking to buy new headphones today but will not buy these again since it appears you have still not fixed the cheap parts problem. (2) I heard recently you were launching new smarthphones. I'm in the market, but will not avoid your products since it appears you really do not care about quality and that was always a reason I bought Sony before. (3) My income sees me buy a LOT of tech products. In short, I"m your IDEAL customer. Young, high income, male, and a spender. But I now view you similarly to General Motors who sold me my first car ... and I've never returned to them since it was a lemon. In short - consumers are forgiving if you show you care. You continue to sell the same product with the same flaws. So I"m moving on. GL to you and Toyota.

DJ Standard

Pros: Excellent sound quality, build quality, comfort and price

Cons: Top layer of leather on the cups has chipped (very small and unnoticable), but I can see it getting worse in the future.

Best pair of headphones I've ever owned. I love the swift movement of the joints. They are so comfortable. Quality is great. Originally I wanted to have a pair of these and then some $500 Shure earphones for my iPod but I realized, since these are so comfortable, have a great frequency range, and are durable. It's not worth it to get earphones. I use these everyday with my iPod. iPod has insane output to these so just being powered from the iPod, they still hurt my ears (without distortion). I love the 1/4 jack and the coiled wire. I do recommend you wrap the coiled wire around the jack a couple of time to release the tension on the connection. That's how most dj headphones break. Some say these are bulky but I love it because they fit around my ear fully, my lobes don't touch the phones at all. BEWARE!!! If you haven't heard already, there are a lot of fake pairs of these that can mostly be found on eBay. I would know, I bought a pair of the fake ones at first. I got a full refund but what you should look out for is the coiled wire to be glossy rather than flat (glossy are the fakes). There are many other things you can see but that is all I noticed. In conclusion, I am going to hold on to these babies until I run them into the ground, then possibly buy them again... haha. Hope you learned from my review.

Cheap Plastic Parts! Design flaw! Buyer beware!

Pros: Sound great

Cons: they break easily

I have had two pairs of these things. Both have broken in the exact same way, The swivel above the the ear piece cracked on both sides rendering them basically useless. No replacement part available! This is a common issue. Why doesn't sony just except some responsibility for making a bad product? Very frustrating. I say don't buy them and get something else.
