This lens fits squarely in the "wide zoom" category, offering a range of focal lengths that are indispensable for serious indoor and architectural photography as well as any other situation that demands wide-angle coverage. City scenes, crowded markets, historical ruins... all of these are subjects that can benefit from the wide perspectives this lens provides. It's also a great lens for shooting dynamic images with deep perspective. Although wide angles present more opportunities for imagedegrading lens flare, the SAL1118 features special elements and design that reduce flare and aberrations to a minimum for crisp, highcontrast images even under difficult conditions.
ED Glass lenses minimize flare and greatly reduce chromatic aberration, giving you photos with sharper focus and more accurate color separation.
Lens elements at the rear of the optical system move, allowing rapid auto-focus response.
In low-light shots or nightscapes, out-of-focus light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Aspherical elements correct frame distortion to provide more visually accurate super-wide-angle shots.
Sony α (alpha) lenses with the Digital Technology (DT) designation are ideal for use on APS-C size DSLR cameras and are not recommended for use with full frame DSLR camera bodies (such as the DSLR-A900). Although DT lenses can be used with full frame cameras, they can only realize a maximum of 11MP image size (when using the DSLR-A900)., and are not guaranteed to provide accurate Auto Exposure performance.

Pros: Sharp, vivid colors under a wide range of lighting conditions, good value for the money
Cons: none
Using this lens with the alpha55 I was able to capture high quality images under both interior and exterior lighting conditions, Unlike the earlier reviewer, I did not experience any edge-related chromatic abberations. Most recommended.

Pros: Great color, Decent speed, Good optics, AMAZING width in shots, Lightweight
Cons: A touch slow in low light, size of barrel makes flash shots hard
I use this lens a lot, mostly for real estate/home interior shots. I purchased it specifically to get some great shots of a home theater that we submitted for an award, and have used it in nearly every home installation that we have done since. It has great color, and you never run out space to fit an entire room into a shot. I have dabbled a bit with portraits with this lens as well, and landscapes are great, but you have to be careful of the distortion that can occur with the wide angle.
