  • Best-in-Class Resolution

Bigger sensors equal better pictures. The NEX-7 boasts a huge, 24.3MP APS-C sensor—the same size sensor used in most DSLRs—for ultra-high resolution and incredibly-detailed photos that make for gorgeous enlargements. With a sensor 13 times larger than the average compact camera, the NEX-7 offers the image quality and performance of a DSLR in about half the size and weight.

Whether shooting a sequence of your preschooler's somersault, or the game-changing instant when ball meets bat, you're sure to capture the most critical moments with up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 24.3MP resolution (exposure and focus fixed at the first frame). It's ideal for high-speed sports photography or capturing the fast, fleeting moments other cameras miss. Standard continuous shooting is also available at up to 2.5 fps.

  • Make HD Movie Magic

Record crystal-clear HD movies in super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or richly-cinematic 24p—all at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution (records in 29-minute segments). Shoot in the industry-standard AVCHD™ codec for stunning fast-motion video with reduced distortion, or choose the web-friendly MP4 format for easy uploading to sites like Facebook® and YouTube™.

  • Control at Your Fingertips

Looking for a quick and intuitive way to set aperture, exposure, ISO and more—faster than ever? Three Tri-Navi control dials put everything at your fingertips for convenient manual control of aperture, exposure, ISO and more. You see the results instantly through the viewfinder or on the camera's tiltable 3.0" LCD. It's the perfect feature for experienced photographers who want immediate, hands-on access to up to three controls at once.

  • World's First OLED Viewfinder

There's never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder™ OLED electronic viewfinder, which brings eye-level, through-the-lens viewing to the NEX-7. Boasting 2359K dots and a high contrast ratio for top resolution and unprecedented brightness, images pop with clarity and detail making it easier than ever to compose your shots. You can even see the results of camera adjustments in real time through the viewfinder.

  • Fascinating Picture Effects

Let your imagination run free with 11 in-camera creative effects. Transform ordinary portraits into colorful, high-contrast works of art with Pop Color. Get the tilt-shift photography look with Miniature effect. Try Toy Camera for a nostalgic, lo-fi feel, or make your focal point pop with Partial Color effect. The real downer for me is the lack of a smart teleconverter like on the a77. With the za24 this would make the camera perfect imo. Should be an easy firmware fix

So much more than a pocket camera, the 24.3MP NEX-7 exceeds expectations. Get performance that would give most DSLRs camera envy, including interchangeable lenses, a 2359K dot Tru-Finder™ OLED electronic viewfinder, up to 10fps shooting, and outstanding Tri-Navi™ 3-dial manual control. Record amazing HD movies in super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution.6 Enjoy the stunning imagery the AVCHD codec delivers or use the MP4 codec for smaller file sizes and easier upload to the web. With the same APS-C sensor size as a DSLR, a higher resolution than most DSLRs and the interchangeable lenses that make DSLRs so attractive, the NEX-7 is still just about half the weight and half the size as its DSLR counterparts.

World’s first OLED viewfinder

There’s never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder™ OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. This eye-level, through-the-lens, viewfinder begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail.

Full HD Movies6 at 60p/60i/24p

Capture HD Movies in your choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution.6 AVCHD™ codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web.

Built-in pop-up flash

Enjoy the convenience of flash photography everywhere you go. Guide Number 6.

Phase Detect AF with adaptor4

The LA-EA2 lens mount adaptor (sold separately) is the world’s first with Sony’s award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology. This provides super-fast and accurate Phase Detection AF when used with Sony A mount lenses.4

World’s shortest release time lag3

Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony NEX-7 boasts the shortest release time in the world (as of August 2011) at only 0.02 seconds.

3D Sweep Panorama™ Mode

Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television7. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats.

Auto HDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot. (Recommended for still subjects.)

iAUTO mode

Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. Takes advantage of Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization without leaving auto mode so you always get the best shot.

Accepts non-Sony lenses via adaptor

You can use the camera with a universe of lenses from Canon, Nikon, Leica, Olympus and others. The success of Sony’s NEX series, combined with the ultra-short 18 mm flange back distance has inspired third-party manufacturers to provide lens adaptors. In addition, Sony has disclosed the E Mount specification to Carl Zeiss, Cosina, Sigma and Tamron.

Stamina™ battery power for up to 400 shots5

Take up to 400 shots on a single charge with Sony® lithium ion Stamina™ battery power (using LCD monitor).5 Sony's InfoLITHIUM® battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence.

Ultrasonic anti-dust system

Dust on the image sensor leads to blemishes in the picture. To protect the sensor, Sony incorporates an advanced ultrasonic system, which effectively shakes dust off the sensor surface.

DSLR quality in your pocket

Here’s the same APS-C sensor size as a DSLR, with higher resolution than most DSLRs and the interchangeable lenses that make DSLRs so attractive. Yet the camera is about half the size and weight of a typical DSLR camera. Removing the conventional mirror box and viewfinder makes it possible.

Up to 10 fps shooting

Capture the decisive moment in sports and get the ideal baby photo. Up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 24.3 MP resolution with exposure and focus fixed at the first frame. Standard continuous shooting at up to 2.5 fps.

HD movies with full manual control

Now you don’t need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies. Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode.

Hot shoe for α system flashes

Take your photography even further with access to the entire range of Sony α system flashes and flash accessories.

Tiltable 3.0" LCD

Sony's 3.0” Xtra Fine LCD™ monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack™ screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further. Tilts down 45° and up 80° to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss.

Accepts Sony® E-mount lenses

Compatible with Sony’s expanded line of E Mount lenses. These smaller, lighter lenses are specifically designed for α compact interchangeable lens cameras. Opens up a world of creative options.

Sweep Panorama™ Mode

Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together.

P/A/S/M modes for video and stills

Enjoy a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control.

BIONZ® image processor

The brain of the camera is a Sony’s BIONZ® image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000 sensitivity. Also enables fast processing for up to 10 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3 MP images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama™ modes and 6-image layering.

25-point Auto Focus

25 sensors cover a very wide area of the scene, for accurate focusing even when the subject is far from the center of the frame.

Sony Exmor™ CMOS sensor

Sony Exmor™ technology uses column-parallel A/D converters for high resolution and high frame rates. Double noise reduction minimizes image noise, even in low light.

24.3 MP; best-in-class resolution3

You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to a 24.3 megapixel sensor. It’s the highest resolution among pocket cameras as of August 2011.

DSLR-class APS C image sensor

Sensor size is the key to picture quality. The APS C class sensor provides gorgeous imaging with 58% more area than Micro Four-Thirds sensors and an amazing 13 times the area of a point & shoot image sensor.

Tri-Navi™ manual control

Perfect for experienced shooters, Tri-Navi control gives you three separate control dials for direct, hands-on access to three settings at a time. As just one example, the dials can set aperture, exposure compensation and ISO.

Accepts A Mount lenses via adaptors4

Both the LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters (sold separately) allow you to attach the full range of Sony A mount lenses.4

Object Tracking AF

Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus.

Peaking function

Manual focus becomes much easier because peaking highlights the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focus setting can make or break your shot.

6-image layering

Leverages the fast BIONZ® processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is an incredible single image that controls blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or gets cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode.

Intelligent Auto Focus

Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum.8

Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)

Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off.

HDMI® output

Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV.9 The camera includes an HDMI® output.

11 Picture Effect modes

Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization, Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color, Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature.

Fantastic Camera/Way Beyond What I Expected!

Pros: Best "Control Functions" I have ever worked with!

Cons: None found yet...

I have had this camera body on order with Sony for the past three months, and so pleased to receive it before Christmas... I own one of the original NEX-5's, and it has been around the World with me in the past year... A wonderful little camera, but left a lot to desire... The NEX-7 fills in all the blanks... I use two Carl Zeiss lenses with the LA-EA2 adapter, and they conbine perfectly in function and speed... The Best!

All i can say is.....WOW

Pros: Small, Lightweight, fast, and incredible control and images

Cons: Make sure you adjust the viewfinder before putting on the Eye cup. Otherwise nothing

I just got my Nex-7 from my local store (National Camera). I pre ordered a long time ago and they finally gave me a call! I am in no rush and I think Sony made a tremedous effort to get some of these out before Christmas (I would have waited till March, but thanks for the early christmas gift sony :) I also have the Nex-5n and will say that once you hold a Nex-7 you will not look back... the EVF is amazing and the tri-nav makes all the difference. If you can wait and spring the cash for the nex-7....you wont regret it! I am now waiting for my 24 1.8 zeiss. Only thing i could wish for now is more weather proofing and a full fram sensor (wishful dreaming). This little camera will go with me more than My D7000.

Great little, lightweight camera

Pros: lightweight, sensor, updated controls

Cons: lightweight, small form factor

I grew up in the film era with all metal Canons and lenses and a lot of controls on the outside of the cameras. I originally bought the NEX-5 when it frst came out and thought it was a great camera to get back into photography. I was dissapointed with the lack of controls outside of the menu system and the lack of a grip. When the NEX-7 came out it was an easy decision to upgrade. And it had an eye level viewer and a grip. The only two problems I have with the Sony Alpha cameras is that the form factor is still too small and light. I have small adult hands (maybe Asians have smaller hands) and even I have problems holding the camera and I'm always accidently touching something, like the movie button, which has been disabled but still gives me an error message right in the middle of taking a shot. Memo to Sony: I KNOW THE MOVIE BUTTON HAS BEEN DISABLED. I'M NOT STUPID. Secondly, I've realized that the weight of the camera/lens helps one hold the camera steady and compose the shot (IMHO), even with IS. If I was a tourist or out all day shooting without taking the camera in and out of a bag, I'd definitely buy a half leather case to protect the camera and help with gripping it. Unless Sony increases the size and weight, I doubt that the NEX series will ever become a professional, working camera. I guess that's why they have the Alpha series. I gave a Yes recommendation, but with reservations.

Starting to LOVE it!

Pros: Superb build quality, Fast responsive controls, Highly Customizable, Electronic View Finder

Cons: Soft JPEGS with "kit" lens. Auto ISO goes only to 1600, no way to save custom settings.

First, let it be known that if you are upgrading from a point and shoot this camera is not the one to do it with. It's not exactly a DSLR killer but a well seasoned photographer will be able to take advantage of it's fantastic sensor. I took a chance first with the NEX-5N. Then my wife took it from me. What better replacement than the NEX-7, right? I believe strongly that mirrorless is the future of Photography and Sony has filled that niche. The EVF is excellent, stills image and video quality both superb, and the handling is remarkably good for such a small camera. Image quality is difficult to fault. The 24MP sensor is capable of recording huge amounts of detail (just as long as your lens can deliver it), which is one of the "faults" of this camera. You need quality lenses in order to take advantage of the sensor. With adapters available you have an unlimited choice of lenses from the other makers. Control dials and buttons are highly customizable which makes me wonder why the other makers never consider doing it this way. The nice little size actually fit my hand much better than the full size DSLRs. The one drawback is the top two dial are indistinguishable so you may accidentally change the wrong settings. Also, there are no way to save customized settings so you have to think about your shots or use the iA mode more often. The NEX-7 is an amazing piece of technology and I feel Sony has done right with the NEX series. Can't wait to see what comes next!

Awesome but...

Pros: Picture quality, weight

Cons: Video button

Everything else is excellent except for the video button that keeps getting accidentally activated (without a possibility of disabling it). I have run down my battery and filled up my memory card because of it. Please SONY provide a firmware update to disable it.

what a camera!

Pros: versatility, ease of use, user friendly gadgetry

Cons: none that I have seen yet

Let me start by saying that I currently have teh Alpha900, the Alpha77, the NEX VG-20, and a few other Sony cameras and video cameras. I've been using Sony gear almost exclusively for the last decade. All those cameras get a lot of use, as did the Alpha55 before the A77. With that as a prologue, I can easily state that the NEX 7 is my favorite among all the cameras I've ever used. My evolution as a photographer was in the Aperture priority mode until the NEX 7 arrived. And suddenly, shooting in full manual mode is almost mandatory. The dials for shutter speed, aperture, and ISO are so available and responsive that one can't help but take full advantage of the feature. The result of this combination of features is that there is much less need or use for editing in post. Images come out very clean, with so little noise even in high ISO shots. I'm so eager to use this camera every day in every condition now. The only strange thing is that I have almost forgotten that I even own those other cameras.

My favorite camera ever!

Pros: Size, build quality and feature set.

Cons: Record button location.

Purchased for a trip to Central America, sold all my Nikon equipment to purchase new Sony lenses and accessories. No regrets at all! It is the perfect camera for traveling. Absolutely amazing picture quality especially paired with the Zeiss 24MM 1.8 lens. Light weight and great size for long and difficult hikes.

Anticipation fulfilled

Pros: well constructed, balanced and excellent results

Cons: control functions very different and video button cannot be disabled

After waiting months for its shipment, this camera is exactly what I expected - "a big-time camera in a small package". The control dials take practice and I wish there were a software adjustment to turn off the video option because I sometimes inadvertantly press it. Overall Excellent!

Frustrated

Pros: Wonderful to use; Great images

Cons: Crashed

I've been with NEX for two years and I really like it. I think Sony has developed something great. So I was very excited to upgrade to the NEX-7. I got it three weeks ago and have totally enjoyed it, both use and images- sometime I just like to pick it up!! But yesterday it presented me with "camera error". Sony's solution was to send it in for repair- ugh! They would only offer ground transportation, so a week each way and up to two weeks for the repair means no camera on my vacation in April. So in two years I've had two quality issues (the other is a poorly designed lens hood for the $1000 24MM Zeiss) and numerous customer service disappointments.... Well, stuff happens and maybe it's OK to be good enough. But I sometimes wish that Apple would make cameras!

more attention to manual lens users please

Pros: great build quality, beautiful design, excellent image quality, great value

Cons: tri-navi designed for jpg shooters. No on/off toggle for peaking feature

I love this camera but.... I shoot raw so the tri-navi isn't much use to me. This has been noted often on this and other forums. I also shoot exclusively on Leica M prime optics with manual focus. The peaking feature is really good but it would be much better if I could toggle it on and off with the tri-navi controls. I'd like to see my images without the highlights before I hit the shutter. I suspect this camera is being used by a lot of folks like me (raw files / legacy prime optics) so heads up sony engineers! Upgrade the software with us in mind!

Love this camera!

Pros: Takes excellent pictures and videos. No bulk.

Cons: None I could think of.

No matter how fast I take shots, the pictures come out really great. The pictures are so clear that you would see the finer details of the subject. I have been wanting to buy a DSLR for myself but I don't like the bulk and the weight of it. NEX-7 is small, light and so convenient to use.

The best camera I've ever had. Almost perfect.

Pros: Innovative and clever design, nice build quality, beautiful images

Cons: Some shortcomings with the firmware

I've been a photographer for more than a decade and I've been using Nikon SLRs and DSLRs. I've always loved this system. However, I was looking for something smaller, but of high quality. Then, last year, the Sony NEX-7 was announced, along with the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 ZA. It was the perfect combination. The camera is very configurable, very well built, and its sensor does marvels. The lens is also a very nice piece of glass (I've been a fan of Zeiss glass for years). My only complaints would be with limiting aspects of the firmware: - No way to adjust auto-ISO. I'd love to be able to set a min and max shutter speed, and a min and max ISO value. My Nikon D90 was able to do it, and I do miss this feature. - No way to adjust brightness and contrast in the (beautiful) EVF. No deal breaker, can be tweaked with JPG settings, but no real way to do it. Other than that, it's a very nice camera. Sony had, in my opinion, the right idea by designing the NEX series in an all-new way, not compromising with a retro look like Fuji is doing right now. Ergonomics are superb, and so are results. The last little quirks could easily be fixed via firmware update. Please Sony, you're that close to make the perfect street-shooting camera.

Sony Store On-line v. Amazon On-line

Pros: Excellent Service and updates on back-orders

Cons: "none that I know of"

I received my NEX-7 camera a month after placing the order in late January 2012. The delay, due to flooding of the Sony factory in Thailand was certainly beyond anyone's control. What I really appreciated about the Sony Store service v. the Amazon service (I had two back-up orders to ensure ONE supplier would be able to provide the camera) was that Sony actually called their shipping department to give me status reports on my order. Amazon apparently was unable to do that which kept me in the blind (I placed my Amazon order August 29, 2011.) Sony contacted me first despite the 8/29/11 v. 1/19/12 -five month difference in order dates AND they shipped the camera three days before Amazon contacted me that the order was "soon" to be fulfilled.

NEX7 Autofocus needs a LOT of work

Pros: everything except autofocus

Cons: autofocus

I have the kit lens, the 55-210, and the Zeiss 24/1.8. I also had a NEX5 (not the "N"). The NEX5 autofocus was awesome (thank goodness because of no EVF) and MUCH better than the AF on the 7. I am (please read this Sony) hoping for an awesome improvement in this with the firmware update. (please Sony? please, please?) I also am thankful they have the "enlarge for manual focus" option. I would be DEAD without this! Wish I still had my NEX5 in the mean time though. That being said, maybe my camera is defective? (Sony?)
