After using a friends Canon and reading review after review of every camera I could afford, I was in a conundrum. I was very worried about buying another Sony after not being very please with my W370 after loving my W300. It lacked versatility. As I waited to see this in a store, I purchased a HX100 and an HX9. They were stunning to use and so very versatile. Basically they sold me on the A77 along with it's amazing features. I opted for the A77 over the A65, because I have wide hands and wanted a comfortable, tough body. The magnesium frame adds some good confidence on being tough, not that I'm rough. But you never know. Its very comfortable to hold and handle. I knew it would be before I even received it. I've spent the past week learning all of it's capabilities, but I found that a morning at the park snapping a variety of subjects has given me a much better understanding of what I'm in store for in the many years I hope to use it. The water fowl was just a short experiment with the 12fps as the bird took off from the lake. I'm sure as I experiment more, my smile will only widen. I could go on, but it's all been said before. It will definitely impress you. It sure did my hard core "Canon Only" friend this last Sunday. I think his plans for the new Canon 1DX is out the window.

I purchased the a77 because of claims that not only was it fast focusing in live view (which it is) but that it is claimed that it has clear files in high ISO (which it does not) when shooting raw images anything above 1600 iso is really not good enough for comercial work, but I still love the camera , just have to use iso 800 or less

I REALLY FEEL LUCK TO BE ABLE TO GET MY A77. IF YOU CAN SET A DIGITAL WATCH YOU CAN SET THIS CAMERA UP WITH VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS. THE OWNERS MANUAL IS VERY GOOD IN POINTING OUT HOW TO SET THE REST OF THE CONTROLS THAT YOU WILL NEED. DON'T WORRY THE TOLL FREE NUMBER AT SONY WILL HELP YOU WITH ANY PROBLEM. I DON'T THINK YOU WILL NEED THEM MUCH AT ALL. OH YES I AM USING A PANASONIC GOLD 16 GB CLASS1 CARD , WRIGHT SPEED AT 90. IT HELPS BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY FAST CAMERA AND YOU WILL LOVE TO USE THE SPEED. I LOVE MINE AND I AM SURE YOU WILL TOO. NOW MY WIFE WANTS ONE . YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT ALL THE NEAT THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THIS CAMERA. THIS WILL TAKE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

World’s fastest up to 12 fps continuous2

The translucent mirror makes it far easier to capture the decisive soccer kick or your baby at her absolute cutest. Shoots up to 12 frames per second at full-resolution 24.3 megapixels with continuous auto focus (AE locked after first frame). This is the world’s fastest shooting speed for interchangeable lens APS-C cameras, as of August, 2011.

HD movies with full manual control4

Now you don’t need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies.4 Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode.

World’s shortest release time lag3

Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony A77 boasts the world’s shortest release time lag at only 0.05 seconds.3

19-point Auto Focus

To maximize the value of Translucent Mirror Technology, Sony incorporates Phase Detection AF of great sophistication. 19 sensors with 11 cross sensors maximize precision for both vertical and horizontal subjects.

Top mounted LCD

In addition to status displays on the LCD monitor and Electronic Viewfinder, Sony offers a top-mounted LCD with exposure information.

Handheld Twilight mode

Get gorgeous shots at night without a tripod. Combines six frames into a single image for smooth, low-noise evening shots. (Recommended for still subjects.)

Sweep Panorama™ Mode

Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together.

921K dot TruBlack™ LCD screen

Sony's 3.0-inch Xtra Fine LCD™ monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack™ screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further.

AUTO+ (Advanced Auto) mode

Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode.

Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)

Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off.

HDMI® output for HD viewing7

Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV.7 The camera includes an HDMI® output. In addition, the BRAVIA® Sync system works with compatible Sony® BRAVIA HDTVs enabling you to control camera playback using the television's remote8.

Advanced Anti-Dust Technology

Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor.

APS-C size HD CMOS image sensor

With 19.5 times the area of the typical camcorder image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between amateur and professional-looking video, delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and gorgeous, blurred backgrounds.

Face Detection and Registration

The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of people. Can prioritize children or adults. Face Registration can remember friends and family members and prioritize them.

2nd Generation Translucent Mirror Design

Other DSLRs can shoot. Or they can focus with the speed and precision of Phase Detection AF. They cannot do both at once. Sony changes all that with the award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology system. It directs light to both the image sensor and the Phase Detection AF sensor simultaneously.

World’s first OLED viewfinder2

There’s never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder™ OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. It begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail.

Full-time Phase Detection AF

You get fast, accurate auto focus in every mode—even HD Movie and Live View—thanks to Sony’s exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology. While Contrast Detection Auto Focus often hunts for correct focus, Phase Detection AF knows exactly where correct focus is, and goes straight for it.

Rugged, magnesium alloy body

The SLT-A77 is built for the real world with a magnesium alloy body that combines high strength with light weight. Ports, doors and controls are also weather-resistant for smooth operation under adverse conditions.

Three-way tilt/swivel LCD screen

Tilt it up or down to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss. Tilt and swivel over the camera for self-portraits. You can even tilt it up and down when you hold the camera in vertical mode! Finally, the monitor folds flush to the camera with the LCD exposed for shooting or protected for travel.

6-image layering

Leverages the fast BIONZ® processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is one incredible single image that gets a cleaner result in Multi-Frame NR mode or sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode.

Auto HDR built into camera

Captures more scene dynamic range than a single exposure can handle—and more range than photo film. Combines the best highlight detail from one shot, the best mid-tones from a second and the best shadow detail from a third for one incredible shot. (Recommended for still subjects.)

Built-in GPS

An integrated GPS receiver records the location and time of every shot you take and lets you view your images on a map with compatible computer and Internet applications, so you can remember where you took your favorite shots.6

Main Sensor Quick AF Live View

Combines the fast focus of Phase Detection AF with high quality Live View images right from the main sensor. This is made possible by Sony® Translucent Mirror Technology. You get accurate images and 100% framing on the LCD monitor or eye-level viewfinder.

Graphic Display

Clarifies the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, as well as the effect each has on photographic results.

1200-Zone exposure metering

Reads exposure directly from the main image sensor. Choice of Multi, Center and Spot metering accommodates a full range of shooting situations.

Up to 530 Shots of battery life9

Take up to 530 shots on a single charge with Sony® Stamina™ battery power.9 Sony's InfoLITHIUM® battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence.

Built-in Flash (GN12)

To help you shoot more effectively, the camera includes a built-in flash (Guide Number 12) that can also trigger a wireless accessory flash (sold separately). The integrated hot shoe enables you to expand your lighting options with a range of accessory flashes (sold separately).

Sony® Exmor™ technology

Conventional image sensors use only a handful of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, which can slow you down. The Exmor™ sensor provides more than 5,600 column-parallel A/D converters. This helps enable continuous shooting at up to 12 frames per second.

Smile Shutter™ technology

Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter™ mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity.

24.3 MP; best-in-class resolution2

You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to a 24.3 megapixel sensor. It’s the highest resolution among APS-C DSLRs, as of August 2011.

HD Movies4 at 60p, 60i, or 24p

Capture spectacular HD Movies4. This is the world’s first DSLR to offer a choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution. AVCHD™ codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web.

Full-Time Live View in LCD or EVF

You can use both the LCD monitor and OLED Electronic Viewfinder for composing shots in Live View. Both provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus informative on-screen displays.

Object Tracking AF

Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus.

Dual control dials

Perfect for experienced shooters, dual control dials provide direct, hands-on access to two settings at a time.

Multi-frame NR

Experience incredible low-light shooting without a flash. The camera captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six, it creates a single image with a reduction in noise equivalent to two additional steps of ISO sensitivity. Sensitivity selectable up to ISO 16000. (Recommended for still subjects.)

3D Sweep Panorama™ Mode

Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television1. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats.

Shot Result Preview

See the results before you take the shot. This preview takes the guesswork out of camera settings by showing the effects of the aperture, shutter and DRO settings on the depth of field, motion and dynamic range.

ISO 16000 sensitivity

Incredibly clear low-light pictures without sacrificing detail, made possible by the low-noise Exmor™ APS HD CMOS image sensor and refined BIONZ® image processor.

Upgraded BIONZ® image processor

The brain of the camera is a Sony’s BIONZ® image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000. Also enables fast processing for up to 12 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3 MP images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama™ modes and 6-image layering.

SteadyShot INSIDE™ stabilization

Image stabilization reduces blur by compensating for camera shake. Typical DSLR systems build image stabilization into selected lenses only. SteadyShot INSIDE™ image stabilization is built into the camera body itself. You'll reduce blur with every A Mount lens, including macro and wide-aperture standard zoom lenses.

P/A/S/M exposure modes

The camera offers a full range of controls from the beginner's AUTO+ mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control.

Slot for two media types

For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo™/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™ and SD/SDHC/SDXC media (Class 4 or higher recommended, sold separately).

11 Picture Effect modes

Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization (Color, B/W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow), Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature.

The water fowl was just a short experiment with the 12fps as the bird took off from the lake. I'm sure as I experiment more, my smile will only widen. I could go on, but it's all been said before. It will definitely impress you. It sure did my hard core "Canon Only" friend this last Sunday. I think his plans for the new Canon 1DX is out the window.

high iso misleading

Pros: fast live view focus

Cons: poor high iso performance

I purchased the a77 because of claims that not only was it fast focusing in live view (which it is) but that it is claimed that it has clear files in high ISO (which it does not) when shooting raw images anything above 1600 iso is really not good enough for comercial work, but I still love the camera , just have to use iso 800 or less

THE BEST FOR ALL AROUND USE.

Pros: EVERYTHING. A MUST HAVE. THIS IS JUST .O1 FROM THE PRO CAMERAS.

Cons: I THINK IT NEEDS MORE SEALS TO KEEP THE RAIN OUT. WE WILL SEE ABOUT THIS LATTER.

Great product ... but ... !!!

Pros: Better (than A850/900) in low light or high ISO

Cons: The EVF takes a lot of getting used to

It's a great camera for the money. I sold my a850 and got this one. So far pretty happy with it. It's very easy to take a nice in focus picture with this camera. but if you are comparing it to a850 or a900 it doesn't feel that professional. there's way too many options. and it's a bit over crowded with features. The viewfinder is big and i mean big. but the quality is still not the same as a900. (i know I'm comparing apples and blackberries here) when sony had the OLED TV in the past I was impressed by the quality and that's what I was expecting here. I don't know if I got a defective one or what ... but the colors doesn't seem natural and the quality isn't that good. It's just big and bright. Also not very practical to use in studios where you are using lot of lights. because if you have the 'display with effects' turned on you don't see anything and if you turn it off you have no clue how the pictures is gonna look like in the final product ... also the video is still not pro cam quality ... the focusing is still very slow. but for a photography camera I guess it's very good.

a77 Worth the Wait!

Pros: Very fast; ISO usability great,Tracks extremely well, beautiful shots

Cons: Size of Buffer, requires very fast SCHD Have 45Mb and will get 95Mb card

Have had the a77 for 3 weeks. I am a wildlife photographer and the a77 is very good to excellent in tracking birds in flight. The 12 shots/sec is great at getting the "right" shot. Use the Sony 70-400 and Tamron 200-500. Both keep lock as good as and sometimes better than the a700. At ISO 1600 and 3200, the need for noise control is minimal if at all, especially for 1600. Just getting started with it and with more practice, know it will be well worth the wait!!

WINNING!

Pros: EVF, Feature Set, Build Quality

Cons: Battery life, No Steady Shot Button/Switch

I made the switch from Canon to Sony about five years ago with the release of the Sony a350. Wanting to move to a more feature rich DSLR I did extensive research and liked what I saw regarding Sony and the direction they were going. After acquiring Konica Minolta’s photography technology, it didn’t take long for Sony to start making an impact. They seemed to be on the cutting edge of research and DSLR technology (Sony released the 1st really useful Live View technology). My research was confirmed when I went to a well know photography chain to look at the newest Canon and the salesperson directed me toward the Sony line. After doing a side-by- side comparison of features and image quality, I made the jump to Sony and have not regretted it one little bit! I finally got lucky and caught the a77 in stock at a very popular NY photo supply store and had it in my hands in TX just three days after I placed the order! I have been shooting with it for a couple of weeks. There was a slight learning curve as the a77 is quite an upgrade from my a350. Simply put, this is the best camera I have ever used. It was nice that it came with the newest firmware already installed (1.04). After reading some reviews I was a little concerned about the EVF but am truly amazed at Sony’s implementation of the new technology. It is bright (even in sunlight), big and extremely helpful at obtaining the correct exposure (WYSIWYG) and I don’t have to take my glasses off to use the viewfinder. Another really nice feature that I discovered, while attending a wedding, is the sheer quietness of this camera. Two photographers were shooting the wedding (One with a Canon, the other with a Nikon) and it sounded like the paparazzi. The shutter noise of the pros cameras was distracting while my a77 was extremely quiet. Another cool feature is the “Peaking Level” menu option that is extremely useful while manually focusing the camera (for macro shots, etc.). When you obtain focus the EVF or the back LCD draws color lines (red, white or yellow options) around the object you are shooting to verify focus. Really cool and useful. If I have to find something to complain about regarding the a77 I have a few points. One, the battery life could be longer. It uses the same battery as my A350 (so I have some extras) but it would be nice if Sony would develop a longer lasting battery. For some reason the GPS feature seems to suck battery life. Two, there is no “Steady Shot” button on the camera body. To use the camera on a tripod I have to go through the menu system to turn off “Steady Shot.” Not a huge deal but a button/switch would have been nice. That’s it, no other negatives from my perspective. There has been a lot of chatter about the noise in high ISO ranges from this camera but I have not found it to be an issue in real world use. All cameras are going to be “noisy” in ISO 1600 and up. This camera has so many useful features as well as many fun options; it’s just not practical to discuss them in a short review. Just a note of caution. . . if you are trying to make a decision about which camera to buy, keep in mind that not all reviews on the Sony DSLR/SLT cameras are unbiased. As I was researching I found that many pro reviewers (photographers, tech. geeks, etc.) were heavily biased toward the equipment they use. There are also many unbiased reviews that point out the short comings of each of the camera models. I recommend that you go to a photo store and see them for yourself and do your own side-by-side comparison. If you have lens from Canon or Nikon it may not make since to switch. But, Sony is on the cutting edge and the future looks bright for their technology. I know I'm going to be very happy with my a77 and look forward to what is next.

GPS on the A77 leaves room for improvement

Pros: Lots of great features

Cons: GPS constantly wrong

This is my second A77. I took the first one back because the GPS constantly was off by 3/4 a mile. Yep you guessed it, the second camera has the same problem. The manual says the GPS should be accurate within 98 feet. The two cameras I have used both were off by 3/4 a mile. Other than the GPS problem. The camera is GREAT ..... so far, but I have only had it two days now.

Couldn't be happier

Pros: 12fps burst, 1080p60, autofocus in video mode

Cons: Low ISO sensitivity

I cannot be happier with this camera. Working on wedding videos, this camera pairs perfectly with a steady cam system because of it's autofocusing. The OLED viewfinder is pretty amazing too. When considering all the advantages to the A77, the disadvantages in comparison to a traditional DSLR hardly matter.

Simply Amazing!

Pros: Focus Peaking, Speed, EVF, Overall Build Quality

Cons: No dual SD slots

In a nutshell, this is an amazing camera, and I highly recommend it! Lets start with the software and menus. The menus are very easy to navigate through as well as understand what each category is for. The joystick makes choosing options and changing menus a breeze. At first, I wasn't sure if I would've liked the joystick because it poses as a very good candidate to subject to wear and tear, but after using it for awhile and getting use to the camera, the build quality is superb and it shouldn't be a problem at all. As usual, Sony makes the menus very aesthetically pleasing and easy to use, so that's a plus. Firmware version 1.04 is a little laggy when you're using the dials, and the shut down time is very slow, so make sure you upgrade to firmware version 1.05 where all of these issues are fixed with additional performance tweaks! Lets talk about the hardware. The a77 isn't exactly a lightweight, it fairs well with the fullframe cameras in terms of size and weight. Of course it doesn't lose in IQ either (unless you're comparing to bodies that cost 5-6 grand, but that's hardly a fair comparison). It feels great in the hand, the ergonomics of the camera has been carefully designed so most people will find that the camera fits very nicely in their hand. The body itself is weather sealed and it's great to know that even if you accidentally get it wet, the camera will be perfect fine. There are videos all over the internet where people are pouring bottles of water onto the camera and it fairs fine. The EVF on the a77 blows all previous EVF's (from other models) out of the water, but this is something you have to experience first hand to fully understand what I'm talking about. Overall thoughts. Overall, this camera is splendid. Definitely worth it's pricetag. With the right lenses and skill, the photos that this camera can produce will be nothing short of breathtaking. A very innovative function of focus peaking will help many photographers pinpoint what is in focus, and what is not; sometimes the eye simply isn't enough to see if shots are in focus or not. The camera's overall speed is very good. No lag present anywhere (firmware 1.05) and it's ability to shoot 12FPS is very impressive, currently king of the hill in that field. It's video recording capabilities are strong too. It's ability to record at a high frame rate ensures that the videos will be recorded smoothly; none of that choppy nonsense. To sum up, if you're looking for a camera that can do pretty much everything, and do the tasks well, look no further. You've found it.

Learning Curve

Pros: Fast, SD Card, Night Shooting, AF, Video, Live Review, Light, Strong

Cons: Assesories; No Dual SD,

Just got this camera; so far so good...so lucky before Track and Field Season. [Note] Use tripod for no flash shots...no margin for error. Takes multiple shots for no light situations. This is not a beginner camera; and don't expect to use AUTO and take great pictures. This is Pro Level and way beyond my A700 replacement. Do your checks before shooting and learn all the settings please. Will do another report after a month of usage. Hope you enjoy the TV shot picture on my Plasma TV. Yes, its an actual shot too... my TV is that good; but so is the A77 a JPEG shot. Using a Tameron 28-300mm XD Di LD...so hope this puts some light on things. Video AF tracks well too...even on my TV..was tracking the closet image. Well done !! SONY...Video is Pro Level... No Hype...

Absolutely amazing!

Pros: More comfortable size, magnesium alloy body feels sturdy, weather-sealed controls, unbelievable megapixels, top LCD

Cons: Low-light performance isn't the best, proprietary flash stuff gets old

This was an upgrade from an a33, which treated me well for a long time but I was beginning to outgrow it. Coming from the a33, however, I was used to the whole translucent mirror thing, which is definitely a hurdle for standard mirror users because exposing properly takes a little extra thought. The a77 has a much better feel than its smaller counterparts with its bigger body. The build quality feels solid and the weather-sealed controls make taking this thing out into the elements a little less frightening. The images it produces are gorgeous, however. The 24 megapixel sensor allows room for cropping or blowing up the images. My only real gripe about the camera is that due to the translucent mirror, there is a measure of light loss, which makes low-light shooting rather difficult if you're like me and hate bumping the ISO above 800. Overall, great camera and I'd buy it again if I were given the chance to do it all over!

What a Machine!

Pros: Fast, accurate, EVF is amazing

Cons: none yet

I started following the A77 "rumors" some time back as I had (recently just sold) an A700 and wanted something faster w/ better ISO performance. I mainly shoot B.I.F. with my nature club, and found with the A700, I was losing that "critical shot" as predetors hunted, and also early evening Owls in flight, as the A700's ISO and FPS would fall short. So, I took the chance, and bought the A77. WOW! The focus and frame per second speed is incredible, the EVF (something that made me very nervous when I ordered) is not only as bright, and clear as the A700's, but the info. you get, the liveview, the W/B adj. preview, level guage, I could go on & on, is fantastic! The resolution in eye watering, the focus is lightning fast, and extremely accurate. This is the "direct replacement" for the A700, and Sony should really be commended for their effort, I personally think they did an exellent job. Honestly, being new, the SLT technology had me a little aprehensive, but after using it (especially for B.I.F.) i'm 100% sold, there's just too many advantages to it, once you've actually "used it" to ever want to go back to a standard DSL(R)

Fun & Great Camera

Pros: translucent mirror, EVF, many useful features

Cons: translucent mirror, EVF,one card slot

I am an old Minolta user and of course that led me to Sony and I have the alpha 100, 700, & 850. With my upgrade to the a77v all the outstanding features that come with making cameras into small computers open more creative avenues in making images. For the most part I cannot complain because this instrument is fun to use and creates great images. However I do have three bones to pick. This camera has only one card slot and that is a step down from the a700 and a850. Also with all my CF cards I can only use them in my older cameras. That is a real downer if you are upgrading like me. The translucent mirror is a plus and a minus. The plus is no mirror to move during picture taking which means more shots per second and no mirror slap or less noise. Also the auto focus works in the movie mode. On the down side the auto focus makes noise and is recorded during movie making which kind of nulls out the advantage of the translucent mirror allowing auto focusing during movie making. Another negative is the loss of light passing through the mirror. While this is said to be minor try this and decide for yourself. Enable shutter release without the lens. Remove your lens and aim the camera at a smooth blank wall. Take two pictures. One with the mirror down as is done normally and for the second release the mirror (as per your manual) before shooting. Compare the two images and you will see a difference of a third to a half f stop. If you have bought one of those expensive f2.8 Carl Zeis or Sony lenses ... well a traditional mirror has the light advantage. The EVF has many advantages because you do things with it you could never do with an OVF. However keep in mind with an OVF you are seeing what the lens sees just as with binoculars. With the EVF you are seeing an image or picture created by the software that runs the camera. For the most part that is ok, but if you wear sun glasses or like me I have prescription glasses (Blind without them.) that darken in sunlight, looking through the EVF shows a very dark image. For me it is almost impossible to judge what I am looking at. Second I find the EVF very contrasty. When shooting contrasty scenes the shadows are too dark to judge and the highlight blow out. The camera needs a way to adjust the contrast level of the EVF.

My 3rd Sony camera in less than two years

Pros: See review below - Very Happy with camera

Cons: OLED view finder not clear in low-light situations

I have been a photo hobbyist since 1954. I began using digital cameras in 1999. After more than ten years of Olympus use, I made my first Sony camera purchase in June 2010, an alpha 380, after months of diligent comparisons of features and prices among all the various manufacturers of digital SLRs. The alpha 380 came out the hands-down winner. Then, the SLTs came out. Owning my 380 for only five months, in November 2010, I purchased the alpha SLT 55. Vastly greater performance. My main motivations for this move were 1) were 1) the translucent mirror and 2) the GPS receiver built in. Not a thing wrong with this camera, but when the SLT77 came out, I did another comparison to see what the 77 offered that was not on the 55 to justify the substantial price increase. The features that mostly influenced my decision were 1) the improved bracketing since I do almost all my (outdoor) shooting that way and make substantial use of HDR software on my computer and 2) the greater flexibility of the LCD screen. One surprising nice feature of the A77 is that it shows GPS coordinates on screen. I had no trouble selling my A380. I believe I shall have no trouble selling my A55. Sony cameras, at every level, remain the best value of features for the money available today. Btw...I was disappointed that while Sony told me the a77 was out of stock, I was able to purchase it overnight from a dealer.

Sony Alpha77

Pros: Excellent pictures, crisp and captures lighting thrown across subjects perfectly.

Cons: Buffer of 12 f/p/s appears slow

Very excited about the 77 and its performance did not disappoint. Fantastic camera and the lens that came with it was awesome - there is something neat about having image stabilization in the camera and not the lens. Honeymoon over - I am very annoyed at the hotshot fit of the A77 - the flash wobbles on the mount and its found on all the models I tried so its not a local fit issue. I would expect the build quality to be much better on the camera for this price - it makes if feel cheap ! Sony please sort it out !!!

Very Impressive!

Pros: Extremely fast, very sharp images, very cool features & picture effects.

Cons: Would have liked a CF slot as well as SD

I have shot with an a700 for almost 5 years and was very skeptical when the a77 was announced in August as it’s replacement. My skepticism was based on 3 things: 1) the image quality of 24mps on a “C” sensor (lots of mps on a small sensor); 2) the quality of the OLED viewfinder; 3) the buffers ability to keep up with the speed of the camera in RAW and 12fps. Well, my concerns were put to rest when I tested the camera and saw the results. 1) With the high quality Sony and Tamron lenses I use, the 24mps makes the images extremely sharp and crisp without any noticeable edge distortion. WOW! Just amazing quality. 2) The OLED does take some getting use to and can become very pixelated in low light, but the advantages of what it can do when setting the proper exposure, shutter speed etc so that “what you see in the OLED viewfinder is exactly what you get on the card” has changed the way I shoot for the better. 3) The buffer speed when shooting in RAW or in the 12fps mode is not an issue WHEN YOU use a SD 92mb/s card. Slower cards work but you sacrifice buffer performance in RAW and at 12fps. Turn off the image preview. Image preview really overworks the buffer especially at 12fps. As you get use to using the OLED, you will find you won’t need to be constantly previewing the images you just took because “what you see in the OLED is what you get”. Now for the fun stuff the camera can do: 1) in camera panorama mode; 2) digital 1.4 and 2.x zoom; 3) what I call Super Auto mode for the times when you are just shooting snap shots of family, things etc.; 4) and my favorite is the “Picture Mode”- with HDR Paint mode, b/w monotone, b/w spot color, soft focus, toy camera, etc. To give you a better idea of the image quality and let you judge for yourself if this is the right camera for you here are a couple of images taken in jpeg without any photoshop corrections or enfacements.

Great upgrade from A500

Pros: Almost everything.

Cons: Average ISO performance on JPEG and RAW files

I just got this camera yesterday and overall I was satisifed on what sony has done with this camera. My only issue with this camera is even with the new firmware, responsiveness is still kinda slow, UI has some occasional glitches and ISO is still not the best. I just hope Sony will address this issues on their next firmware. Overall this camera is a great product and a good upgrade from my old one.

Very impressive

Pros: EF, OLED view screen, speed, IQ, modes available, fast navigation, color.

Cons: the jpg engine could use a little tweaking, the button customization could be improved

I've not had this camera for very long (< one month), so I'm still finding ways to use all of its' myriad functions, but having used the α700 since it came out, I was quickly able to get some photos that I was happy with. I generally shoot RAW and will continue to, but I'm finding that the extra fine jpg's are pretty good and have enough information that (with a good exposure) they can still be fine tuned. I have a converted Minolta Rokkor lens that must be manually focused and using the manual magnifying feature makes keepers something I can depend on. The AF on this camera nails it under almost all lighting conditions - and quickly! I'm certain that continued use will give me an even greater appreciation of this fine camera. I love my α700, but this camera is in another league.

Pros: Fast, great video, wonderful view finder, and did I mention fast

Cons: None

I also have the original Sony Alpha DSLR. I do a lot of wildlife photography and one of the things that I always wished that I could improve was the autofocus speed. My new A77 took care of that problem. This thing is blazingly fast. With the tracking focus, I can easily keep up with the Bald Eagles now!!

An Excellent Tool For The Proud "Prosumer" Set

Pros: Stunning image resolution, supports wireless ratio flash, functional articulating rear LCD panel, focus peaking

Cons: Pundits have criticized high ISO performance, 1080p video is not as quite as good as dedicated Sony advanced handycams

I do not earn a living with my camera, but I am motivated to create the highest quality images that often rival local professionals. My budgetary emphasis always explores the question regarding which sought-after photography equipment delivers the most bang for the buck. The A77 and the Alpha system components allow me to achieve that goal as a labor of love within a tolerable price range. There is a world of escape, discovery and self-absorbing fun to be had for anyone who takes the time explore the extensive feature set of the A77. I have never experienced buyer remorse with any Sony high-end product. That, in and of itself, is a remarkable statement.
