Pros:
Tiltable, Fast
Cons:
Can't use with Flash or mic
I prefer a viewfinder versus lcd screen especially since I need reading glasses now. I heard a lot of bad things regarding EVF's but this particular one is almost as good as the optical view finder in my 850. At least I would not hesitate purchasing Sony's next FF if it had an EVF if this is any indication what it will be like. The image is bright, displays the information found on the LCD screen in the view finder and has very little lag when panning. I love the way you can tilt the view finder up. Great for candid shots since people don't realize you are about to take their photo. I just wish there was one more input so you could use the EVF with the flash. I much prefer to use the EVF than taking a picture using the back LCD and if you do I would not hesitate getting this. I am sorry it is not compatible with the nex 5 or 3 but giving it one or two stars because you are jacked about that doesn't tell us how actually good this EVF is. Also when using the viewfinder it puts the camera in a better position to steady the camera and compose your shot, even for a small camera such as the 5N.

Pros:
Most responsive EVF I've ever used
Cons:
Priced too high, more Sony cameras should have this built in
After having extensively used the hybrid optical/electronic EVF of Fujifilm's X100, I can state without doubt that the Sony EVF is miles ahead in terms of performance. Being somewhat far sighted using the LCD along for focus and composition isn't always ideal or even possible, particularly when trying to achieve critical focus and especially so when using manual focus lenses. The Sony EVF makes this much easier on the eyes and improves ones chances of getting the shot.
The EVF might not be for everyone, but for those of us who prefer a viewfinder, it is a welcome addition to the camera. Please Sony make more models with an EVF built in!

Pros:
Beautiful, fast, bright, detailed
Cons:
Can't use flash at same time
This viewfinder is so fast that at first you don't realize it is electronic. It is that good. All the information you want is there, easy diopter adjustment and the focus peaking feature that makes it a must when used with legacy manual lenses is there too. I would not have purchased the 5N without this. Now the NEX series has a viewfinder!!

Pros:
Useful with strong sunlight and manual lenses
Cons:
Too much contrast. Magenta cast. Bad focus picking in magnification
Good resolution with too many problems:
1)Too much contrast. Black and white colors are blocked (artificial-looking).
2)Color tends to magenta making it difficult (or impossible) to manually set balance white.
3)In magnification mode (manual focus) focus piking not work very well and the image is a bit blurred.
Aside from the problems (possible solution with firmware update?) use with manual lenses is a must.

Pros:
sharp imaging, small
Cons:

A must have for viewing in sunlight. Elevates the NEX-5N to near DSLR status. I would not be without it.

Why would they make a EVF costing $350 for a $700 camera that just came out?
For almost the same price ($150 more) you can upgrade to a NEX7 that has a better built in viewfinder and is in general a much higher quality camera than the NEX5N.
You would think something like this would be perfect for users who have owned the original NEX5 and want to add an electronic viewfinder but don't want to or can't afford to upgrade the whole camera body. That would be the logical thing. Unfortunately, doesn't seem like Sony gets that yet or they are trying to gouge you into buying the NEX7 outright. Either way, not happy.

Pros:
Its size
Cons:
Only for Nex-5N
I am a proud Nex-5 early adopter and i do not know why Sony decided to punish the early adopters of wonderful Nex 5 and Nex 3 plus recently Nex C3.
We all waited for the EVF to come with a support to the old models plus the new Nex C3.
Already I am not going to sell my Nex 5 any soon to get Nex 5N but i am ready to pay for $300 to get the EVF just like I am ready to pay for lenses.
I am disappointed and sad
Please do not punish the Nex-5 and Nex 3 early adopters dear Sony as they are the reason for the Nex success and think for some kind EVF compatible to our old models

I bought one of the first NEX 5's available. The only thing I was missing was an optical viewfinder. Once I came across the FDAEV1S I thought great! But I'm more than disappointed, as it only works with the newly released NEX5N? Sony, WTH???

Cons:
Why i cant use it on my NEX5..
I quite disaponted with it, why sony didnt make an EVF for their succesed products such NEX5 and 3? In other word, we have to buy this new product for an EVF feature!
Like other brand, they make EVF for all range series, why?

The real problem is why no one is making any explanation from Producer side.
They may need a physical device to ensure that option maybe, but making no explanation putting sony into a bad sitıation.
I also have a nex 5 with la-ea1 and many a mount lenses. A digital viewfinder will be something from heaven.
Best regards

Sure wish it worked with the NEX 5. This would be a great seller even at $300. Maybe they'll make it comparable in the future software update. For now disappointed.

Pros:
Super high resolution, very fast refresh, well integrated with 5N.
Cons:
Color a bit subdued compared to LCD, image appears slightly compressed horizontally.
Best EVF I have used to date and am glad to have it as an option. Camera info is displayed outside the image area in two black horizontal bands so there are no distractions to composition. Easy to put on and take off. Changes between back LCD and viewfinder reasonably quickly when you bring it up to your eye.
