Silent, high-speed AF drive via SAM

The Auto Focus drive in the SAL is smooth and quiet thanks to its SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor), which also helps improves AF response when shooting moving subjects. Reductions in drive noise also make the SAL-18135 quieter than other entry-level model lenses in the line-up.

New Direct Manual Focus mechanism

DMF (Direct Manual Focus) functions previously offered mainly on Carl Zeiss, G and other high-performance lenses are included with the SAL18135. DMF allows users to quickly switch between AF (autofocus) and MF (manual focus) without removing their eyes from the viewfinder to easily seize fleeting photo opportunities with success.

Superior internal optics including ED glass

Featuring a single ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens element as well as a pair of aspherical lens elements, the SAL-18135 delivers images with low levels of color aberration. The result is excellent image quality that ranges from indoor photo birthday parties to as stunning landscapes.

Comfortably light mid-range zoom lens

The SAL-18135 reduced weigh of 14 oz./398 grams makes it easy to shoot while also finding ways to enhance the shooting experience. Its weight was especially reduced in the front of the lens to improve overall balance and make it easier to hold the camera steady when taking photos.

Great All Purpose Lens

Pros: Sharp, Fast Focus, Very Little Distortion for an aspherical Lens

Cons: None So Far

I've had this lens for a couple weeks now. It came in a bundle along with my a65 camera. It focus very fast and there isn't much distortion at full zoom even though it has aspherical elements. I would definitely recommend this lens to someone.
