Happy Camper

Pros: Excellent video quality

Cons: 12 megapixel still photos look terrible

I don't plan to shoot stills with this, so the con doesn't bother me. I am very impressed with the dynamic range, color reproduction and resolution of the video on this camera. I wish it had a Zeiss lens, but the Sony G lens is acceptable. The 1080i/60 easily renders to 1080p/30 the quality is breathtaking. I especially like the low light capabilities. A windscreen for the built-in microphone would be nice, but I intend to get a Rode shotgun microphone to make the system perfect. I highly recommend this camera.

STEVEN SPIELBERG'S CAMERA (BEST IN THE UNIVERSE)

Pros: High speed shooting, crystal clear full high-definition video, better than the human eye, better than any pro camera!

Cons: The fact that you have not bought this camera yet.

Don't listen to the other negative reviews, they don't know what they are talking about, and haven't worked with the camera yet. All the features that they said it didn't have, it DOES have. This is the best camera you will ever handle in your life. Look no further. The quality is better than the Sony Z1 - which is nine times the price. This is it. You can do anything with this amazing tool for capturing light (camera). What are you doing? Go and buy three of these cameras now! The LCD screen is the best thing you have ever seen in your life. It is better than your eyes. Your eyes can't even see the screen, it is just too good. Seriously though, this a rock solid piece of equipment from Sony. THE LOW LIGHT is insane. The flagship of this camera is that it shows no difference between day and night shooting. Turn off all the lights and go into the desert at 1am in the morning. It will look like daytime. It shoots amazingly in the dark. The G Lens is so clear, you will never need glasses again. You can do anything and everything manually with this camera. It is better manual control than the FIFA Broadcast cameras. Mic inputs and headphone outputs are insane. This camera shot better quality in low light (side-by-side) next to a camera used for Avatar the movie. Buy now. The photo stills are so good, every other camera in the world will be discontinued and this is the one and only new camera. Don't doubt Sony. 10 STARS.

I have been waiting for sony to catch up to the 1080p camcorder in their competitors for awhile now. Seems that it is not in the cards for march of 2010 with HDR-XR550V. full 1080p in competitors has been out for over a year. Guess I will have to wait some more...

Sony, stop providing sub-par products

Pros: Decent video quality (not "full" HD though as labeled)

Cons: no Mac support for geotagging, no FireWire for fast video transfer, and others

iPhoto in Mac OS X has no problem with geotagging when an open standard for geotagging is used. However, Sony uses proprietary geotagging that only works with their software, which isn't Mac supported. Also, there is no FireWire, so you have to wait, up to an hour at times, for your video to transfer to the computer over the SLOW usb cable. Sony includes "bells and whistles" that NO ONE USES, the camera could have been less expensive if these weren't included. Any real camera person will edit on their computer, not on the camera itself. I also truly hate the fact that the camera turns on the moment you open the LCD screen. What if I just want to open it and not have it turn on? Stupid design flaw there. Sony used to be the leader in consumer electronics, but in recent years they have fallen.

Sony HDR-XR550V

Pros: Compact and Light, 240GB, High-Def, Wide Angle, Accepts SDHC card

Cons: Optical zoom is only 10x

Note: This is my personal opinion of this product and it does not intend to contradict other's point of view. I got my preordered 550V last week and tried playing with it. The video is crisp and clear even at low light. However, I took couple of photos inside a restaurant during night time without flash and pictures were a little smudged or stained. With the built-in flash, pictures were better. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase, though a little pricey. But on the contrary, you get a lot on this compact and light camcorder for what you are paying. The only complain I have is the zoom. I have to buy a 2x lens. Meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy this camcorder and hopefully can share more out of experience.

Missing Three Major Things!

Pros: small, compact

Cons: too pricey for lack of features

The three key features missing is price (too high), the lack of a 60x zoom or better and the absence of nightshot. I am a night owl and sky watch sometimes. I still have my sony dcr-pc9 and will not upgrade till sony, panasonic, samsung or someone else comes out with an 1080p hd camcorder with the above features (60x zoom or better, improved night vision feature wich everyone seems to be excluding for some reason, and has to be less than 1,000$). Someone will do it, its just a matter of time. Sky watching at night is cool and night vision can pick up stuff in the sky that the naked eye can,t. C,mon sony get with it. gh

Good for serious newbies

Pros: Quality, memory storage

Cons: battery life, small zoom, price

For a newbie, this camera is godly to them. I personally am new at filming, and I came from cameras that used DV tapes and were just frustrated at both quality and how frequent the heads got dirty on those cameras. No longer will it take an hour to capture an hour worth's of footage. Quality is also very amazing because it's my first HD camera, so I have nothing really to compare it to. The price is a bit expensive and the battery life only lasts about an hour and a half if recording at HD FX (highest image quality). Honestly I don't think firewire is needed since an hour footage takes about 5 minutes for me to transfer. My white balance settings keep resetting to Auto when i want it on Custom, kinda weird there. Zoom is a bit small, but a lot of my work is in 720 by 480, so I never really use it. The auto settings are a bit wonky, especially in exposure. A lot of the shadows do turn out darker on the computer than when reviewed on the camcorder.

Not Worth The High Price

Pros: Not to big, has viewfinder, great video quality, fast start up

Cons: No firewire usb only, short battery life, poor interface

I don't know what the other reviewers were saying about poor video quality, but at 1080P the quality was great. Perhaps they couldn't figure out how to set the camera to 1080P because the interface is confusing. Overall the camera would be fine for the average consumer if the price was around $650-$700. I would recommend this camera to a friend but I would tell them to wait till it comes down in price.

Possibly worth it.

Pros: easy to use; surprisingly good picture.

Cons: touch screen annoyingly small & seemingly fragile; external audio source required.

Have "grown up" on Sony: from TRV900 through to XDCam. Budget restraints forced this purchase, and the picture quality and ease of use has blown away client & DoP respectively. Virtually a point & shoot camera when on auto settings, it has passable low lux capture as well. Given Apple's Final Cut Pro updated codecs, the footage is converted straight off of the camera through "Batch Capture" in fcp 2 upwards (many thanks to Wade at TVNZ for pointing this out, saving me numerous hours on TOAST conversions). Drawbacks are nit-picky given it is a consumer level camera, but display seems very flimsy given everything operates off of the touch screen, and an external audio source is required to avoid recording noise from camera. Given the camera was purchased only days before it travelled overseas and was used on a 10 day shoot, all involved with the project it was purchased for are very happy with the footage it has provided.

Excellent Camcorder

Pros: Image quality

Cons: none

We took vacation video and pictures over a 9 day period. The quality is excellent and the storage is amazing. we recorded in HQ because we thought that was the highest setting (FX is highest) and it is still great HD footage. Fireworks looked excellent. We never came close to running out of memory but we ran out of battery power because we used the LCD screen as viewfinder. I would recommend the extra battery for long days at a theme park, although we were able to charge the camera on a few occasions. We ended up with many hours of high quality footage with good audio.

A professional camcorder in disguise.

Pros: All specs already listed, great pictures

Cons: Focus wheel SLOW! Steady Shot sometimes "overdoes" it

PREVIEWS-SEE ATTACHED PICTURES TO SEE HOW WELL THIS CAMERA DOES WITH FOCUSING. REVIEW: This camera is amazing, and is small, lightweight, and easy to handle despite its amazing features. I DO recommend buying a rig or bracket, placing a light, mic, or monitor on the top can make the camera wobbly. NIGHTSHOT- Nightshot, only good for super close up stuff, and to get any good shot you need the nightshot extender. OPTICAL STEADY SHAKE-in modes standard, off, and active. Active WAY overdoes it, standard is good enough. FOCUS-Goes WAY to slow!!!! You have to turn it for a long time to go from different focal lengths, and you HAVE to be on a tripod, because if your not, it shakes the camera to move it. Smooth Slow Record is ONLY 3 seconds at a time, and then it has to sit there and "render" it for 12 seconds. Overall good camera, quality is AMAZING, and the pictures this thing can take it AMAZING and have very good focus rates.

So close, yet so far.

Pros: Excellent video quality

Cons: Nerfed Zoom Lens

I don't understand the logic behind some of these decisions. This year they include manual control of shutter and iris, which I wish last years model would have; however, they take away a huge chunk of upper end zoom power away. It baffles the mind.

This is a great camera

Pros: Portability, Clarity, Sturdy, Hard drive space, great images

Cons: two tiny sound glitches

This camera is amazing. I've done weddings, travel, photos riding an AmTrak train, macro images. The firewire allows me to simply copy the video clips to an external hard drive and/or my comuter video files. You may need to purchase software that "read" the HD mts clips. Photos have stunning clarity. Very pleased. wish it was on sale when I purchased it.

Not true 1080p

Pros: size, WA lens, OIS

Cons: not true 1080p, not 3-chip color, blue dot in some videos

People should not be confused, this camera is not a true 1080p native camera like its competitor. It has a 1080p setting which merely performs the deinterlacing in the camera. This is not the same as a native 1080p mode which is much better. The camera does have excellent OIS

Excellent Time Saver, HD Quality

Pros: Compact, easy to maneuver, anti-shake, excellent quality, low light shooting, capacity

Cons: 10x zoom, bit tricky to upload files to PC, hot shoe not universal

I needed a small, HD widescreen DV camera with SD card and lots of storage. This camera fits the bill. I've owned it for about 6 months and have produced excellent finished corporate videos with it. I use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit and recommend using Sony's accompanying software to upload the files (drag and drop loses audio on MPG files in certain cases...took a bit of sleuthing to figure that out). Audio Technica has a nice inexpensive lav package that integrates well. Overall an excellent camera perfect for busy field shooting or in studio.

U got to be kidding me

Pros: Everything very nice except image quality

Cons: Very poor detail in shadows and highlights

I was lucky to return this camera without a restocking fee. I was so excited buying it but then, running fast to return it!!! - compare the images from this camera to any panasonic - it is like day and night. I really expected something better than that from Sony!!!
